What Are Positive Affirmations for Anxiety and Depression?
Positive affirmations are short, intentional statements you repeat to yourself to challenge negative thinking patterns and encourage a more supportive mindset.
They are especially helpful when your thoughts feel overwhelming or self-critical. In midlife, many women find themselves navigating emotional shifts, identity changes, and increased responsibilities, which is why simple tools like affirmations can feel grounding and supportive.
Can Positive Affirmations Get Rid of Anxiety or Depression?
Positive affirmations for anxiety and depression are not meant to replace therapy, medication, or professional support. However, they can be a helpful tool within a broader self-care routine.
Frequently Asked Questions About Positive Affirmations for Anxiety and Depression
These are some of the most common questions about positive affirmations for anxiety and depression, especially for women navigating stress and emotional changes in midlife.
Do positive affirmations really work for anxiety and depression?
Positive affirmations for anxiety and depression may help shift negative thought patterns and support a calmer mindset. While they are not a cure, they can be a helpful tool when used consistently alongside other forms of self-care or professional support.
How long does it take for affirmations to work?
There is no set timeline. Some people notice small emotional shifts within a few days, while for others it may take weeks of consistent practice. The key is repetition and patience, especially during stressful or emotional seasons in midlife.
What are the best affirmations for anxiety and depression?
The best affirmations are the ones that feel realistic and supportive for you. Examples include:
I am safe in this moment
I can handle what comes my way
I am worthy of peace and calm
This feeling will pass
Should I say affirmations out loud or write them down?
Both methods are effective. Saying them out loud can help reinforce belief, while writing them in a journal can help you process emotions more deeply. Many women in midlife find combining both methods most helpful.
What if I don’t believe my affirmations?
That is completely normal. At first, affirmations may feel untrue or uncomfortable. The goal is not instant belief, but gentle repetition over time. Think of them as planting seeds for a healthier thought pattern.
Can affirmations replace therapy or medication?
No. Positive affirmations for anxiety and depression are a supportive tool, not a replacement for professional care. If you are struggling, it is important to seek support from a licensed mental health professional.
A Gentle Reminder for Midlife Women
When you first begin using positive affirmations for anxiety and depression, they may feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. That is completely normal.
The goal is not immediate belief. The goal is repetition, patience, and self-kindness.
Over time, these small statements can become a steady source of support in your daily life.

Why Fall Is the Perfect Time for Self-Care
There is something special about autumn that naturally encourages us to slow down.
After the busy energy of summer, fall invites us to create more intentional rhythms. The cooler temperatures, changing leaves, and cozy atmosphere remind us to spend more time nurturing ourselves and enjoying the little moments.
Fall is also a wonderful season for reflection and renewal. Just as nature prepares for a new season of rest, we can allow ourselves to do the same.
Self-care can look different for everyone. For one person, it may mean enjoying a quiet morning with a cup of coffee and a good book. For another, it may mean taking a walk outdoors, journaling, creating a cozy space at home, or simply taking a few extra minutes with their skincare routine.
The key is finding simple practices that help you feel more balanced, calm, and connected.
25 Fall Self-Care Ideas for a Cozy and Calm Season
Mindful Fall Self-Care Ideas to Support Mental Wellness
Fall is the perfect season to focus on mindfulness and emotional well-being. As life begins to slow down, take advantage of this beautiful time of year to reconnect with yourself.
One of the simplest fall self-care ideas is to write down one or two things you are grateful for each day.
Your gratitude practice doesn’t need to be complicated. It could be as simple as appreciating a beautiful fall morning, a meaningful conversation, a favorite meal, or a quiet moment to yourself.
At the end of each week or month, take time to reflect on everything you have written down. You may be surprised at how this simple habit can shift your mindset and help you focus on the positive moments in your life.
2. Journal About Your Self-Care Journey
Journaling is a wonderful way to slow down and check in with yourself.
Take a few minutes to reflect on questions like:
What is bringing me joy right now?
What areas of my life feel overwhelming?
What do I need more of this season?
What no longer feels aligned with the life I want to create?
Journaling can help you better understand your emotions, recognize patterns, and make intentional changes.
They are designed to help you reflect, reconnect, and nurture your personal growth during the autumn season.
3. Curl Up with a Good Book
There is something comforting about slowing down with a good book on a cool fall day. Create a cozy reading ritual by grabbing a book you have been wanting to read, visiting your local library, or enjoying a digital book from the comfort of home.
Reading is a simple form of self-care that allows you to relax, quiet your mind, and enjoy a little uninterrupted time for yourself. Make it even more enjoyable by creating a cozy reading space with:
A soft blanket
Comfortable lighting
A few uninterrupted minutes away from distractions
A warm cup of tea or coffee
4. Create a Fall Reset by Decluttering Your Space
A cluttered home can sometimes make us feel overwhelmed and stressed. Fall is a wonderful time to reset your surroundings before the busy holiday season arrives.
Start small. You don’t need to tackle your entire home at once.
Try:
Clearing out your closet
Packing away summer clothing
Donating items you no longer use
Refreshing one room at a time
You may be surprised how much lighter and calmer you feel after clearing just one small space.
Creativity is a wonderful form of self-care because it allows us to slow down, be present, and enjoy the process.
Try:
Making a fall craft
Painting
Decorating pumpkins
Creating a seasonal wreath
Trying a new hobby
One of my favorite fall traditions is creating a new centerpiece for my dining room table. I enjoy pulling together pumpkins, candles, and other seasonal touches to create something warm and welcoming. The final product doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. It’s simply a creative project that helps me slow down and embrace the season.
If you’re looking for inspiration, visit your local craft store or community center, or sign up for a class to learn a new skill. Don’t worry about your project turning out perfect; make time to do something that brings you joy.
6. Learn a New Culinary Skill
Fall is the perfect time to spend more time in the kitchen.
Try learning a new cooking or baking skill, experimenting with seasonal ingredients, or making a favorite comfort food recipe.
Cooking can become a mindful activity when you slow down and enjoy the process rather than viewing it as another task on your to-do list.
7. Enjoy a Cozy Night In
Sometimes the best self-care is allowing yourself to rest.
On a chilly fall evening, I love making a warm cup of vanilla coffee, wrapping myself in a cozy blanket, and relaxing on the couch. Whether I’m watching a movie, listening to music, or simply enjoying a quiet evening at home snuggling with my puppies, those little moments of comfort can feel like a true reset.
Physical Fall Self-Care Ideas to Support Your Well-Being
Self-care is not only about relaxing your mind. Taking care of your body is just as important, especially during the transition into a new season.
As the weather gets cooler and our routines begin to change, fall is a wonderful time to focus on nourishing your body, supporting your energy, and creating healthy habits that help you feel your best.
A massage can be a wonderful way to release tension, relax your muscles, and take time for yourself.
If a professional massage is not something you regularly budget for, watch for seasonal specials, package deals, or introductory offers at your favorite spa. You can also consider trading services with a friend who enjoys giving massages or exploring affordable options in your area.
9. Treat Yourself to a Manicure or Pedicure
There is something so refreshing about taking a little extra time to care for your hands and feet.
Whether you visit a salon or enjoy an at-home manicure or pedicure, this simple ritual can help you feel refreshed and cared for.
Consider creating an at-home spa experience by:
Soaking your feet in warm water
Exfoliating dry skin
Applying a nourishing moisturizer
Finishing with a cozy pair of socks
Many salons offer seasonal specials or package pricing, making it easier to enjoy a little pampering without spending a lot.
10. Enjoy a Relaxing Foot Soak
After a busy day, a warm foot soak can be one of the easiest ways to relax and unwind.
Fill a basin with warm water, add your favorite bath salts or essential oils, and allow yourself a few quiet moments to rest.
Afterward, apply moisturizer and slip on a pair of cozy socks to keep your feet soft and comfortable.
This simple fall self-care idea is inexpensive, relaxing, and easy to fit into even the busiest schedule.
11. Refresh Your Skin with a Nourishing Facial Treatment
As the seasons change, your skin often needs a little extra attention.
Cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and indoor heating can leave skin feeling dry and less comfortable. Fall is the perfect time to evaluate your skincare routine and make sure you are supporting your skin’s changing needs.
A gentle exfoliating treatment, hydrating mask, or nourishing facial can help your skin feel refreshed and cared for.
One simple self-care habit I’ve grown to appreciate over the years is slowing down and enjoying my skincare routine instead of rushing through it. As we move through midlife, our skin naturally changes. It may become drier, feel less firm, or need more support with hydration and moisture. Instead of viewing skincare as just another task, I like to think of it as a small daily ritual that allows me to slow down and care for myself.
Fall is a great time to transition your skincare routine by focusing on:
• Supporting your skin barrier • Adding extra hydration • Using nourishing products • Being consistent with your routine • Protecting your skin every day
For me, clean beauty is an important part of my self-care routine. I love knowing that the products I use are thoughtfully formulated while still providing the hydration and support my skin needs.
A few of my favorite fall skincare products include:
Taking a few minutes each morning and evening to care for your skin can become a simple reminder that you are worth taking care of, too.
If you are new to Crunchi and would like to explore cleaner skincare and makeup options, you can save 15% on your first purchase using code ADVOCATE15 through my website. One of my favorite fall self-care ideas is enjoying a warm seasonal drink.
Whether it is apple cider, a pumpkin spice latte, hot cocoa, tea, or your favorite coffee, take time to truly enjoy the experience.
Instead of rushing through your drink while checking emails or completing chores, try creating a mindful moment:
Sit somewhere comfortable
Put your phone away
Notice the warmth and flavors
Enjoy a few quiet minutes
Small moments of enjoyment can make a big difference in how we experience our day.
15. Spend Time Outdoors and Enjoy Nature
Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year to reconnect with nature.
Take a walk through your neighborhood, visit a local park, enjoy a bike ride, or just sit outside and notice the changing season.
Practice mindfulness by paying attention to:
The colors of the leaves
The crispness of the air
The sounds around you
The beauty of the season
Spending time outdoors is a simple way to support your mental health while enjoying the natural rhythm of fall.
Cozy Fall Self-Care Ideas to Embrace the Season at Home
Our environment has a bigger impact on how we feel than we sometimes realize. Creating a home that feels peaceful, comfortable, and welcoming can be a wonderful form of self-care.
Fall is the perfect season to make small changes that encourage you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being at home.
You don’t need to spend a lot of money or completely redecorate your home. Often, the smallest touches can create the greatest sense of comfort.
16. Bake a Favorite Fall Recipe
There is something about fall that makes baking feel especially comforting. The aroma of something warm and homemade in the oven can instantly make your home feel cozy and inviting.
Whether you’re baking for your family or simply treating yourself, spending time in the kitchen can be a relaxing form of self-care. If you’re looking for inspiration, try one of my favorite recipes:
Take your time, enjoy the process, and savor every bite. Sometimes the simplest moments, like baking on a crisp fall afternoon, become the ones we remember most.
17. Add Cozy Touches to Your Bedroom
Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax, recharge, and feel cared for.
As the weather cools, consider adding simple fall touches like:
Cozy flannel sheets
An extra throw blanket
Soft pillows
Warm lighting
A diffuser blend
Then take time to enjoy the space you created. Read a book, relax before bed, or spend a few quiet moments appreciating your cozy surroundings.
Your home should support your well-being, not just be a place where your daily responsibilities happen.
18. Create a Cozy, Calming Atmosphere with Seasonal Scents
Our senses can have a powerful effect on our mood and emotions.
Adding comforting scents to your home is an easy way to create a peaceful fall atmosphere.
Try incorporating:
Spicy cinnamon scents
Warm vanilla
Woodsy blends
Cozy seasonal essential oils
I personally love using essential oils to create a warm and inviting environment without relying on traditional candles or plug-ins.
I get my essential oils from my friend at Balanced Home Apothecary. Her diffuser blends are absolutely wonderful.
You can save 10% on your order with my exclusive code KAREN10 at checkout.
It is a simple way to enjoy the comforting benefits of seasonal scents throughout your home.
19. Add Simple Fall Decor That Makes You Happy
Decorating your home can be a wonderful form of self-care when it is done in a way that brings you joy.
You don’t need to spend a lot of money to create a cozy fall atmosphere.
Consider adding:
A fall wreath on your door
A few pumpkins or gourds
Seasonal pillows
A cozy blanket
Natural elements like leaves, pinecones, or branches
Even small touches can make your home feel refreshed and welcoming.
One of the biggest misconceptions about self-care is that it requires a lot of time.
For many women in midlife, life is full. Between work, family, relationships, household responsibilities, and caring for others, finding an hour for yourself may not always be realistic.
But self-care does not have to be an elaborate routine. Small moments of care throughout your day matter too.
Here are a few simple fall self-care ideas for busy days:
20. Take a Five-Minute Self-Care Break
When your schedule feels overwhelming, try giving yourself just five intentional minutes.
You could:
Step outside and breathe in the fresh air
Enjoy your morning coffee without distractions
Listen to your favorite song
Stretch your body
Take a few deep breaths
Write down something you are grateful for
These small moments can help you reset and reconnect with yourself.
Want a little help getting started?

Practicing gratitude
Spending a few moments outdoors
Taking time with your skincare routine
Setting an intention for your day
Afternoon Self-Care Ideas

Taking a short walk
Stepping away from your computer

Additional Fall Self-Care Ideas to Help You Feel Your Best
21. Take Time to Reflect and Set Intentions
Fall is a natural season of transition, making it a wonderful time to pause and reflect.
Before the busy holiday season begins, take a few moments to ask yourself:
What is working well in my life right now?
What areas need more attention?
What do I want to make more time for?
What habits or commitments no longer serve me?
Self-reflection allows you to reconnect with what truly matters and make intentional choices moving forward.
22. Nourish Your Body with Seasonal Foods
Fall offers so many wonderful opportunities to enjoy nourishing, comforting foods.
Try incorporating more seasonal ingredients like:
Apples
Squash
Pumpkin
Sweet potatoes
Leafy greens
Warm soups and stews
Preparing nourishing meals is a form of self-care because you are giving your body the fuel it needs to feel its best.
23. Make Time for Something That Brings You Joy
Self-care is not just about relaxation. It is also about doing things that make you happy.
Think about activities that bring you joy:
Visiting a local fall festival
Taking photos of autumn scenery
Spending time with friends
Trying a new hobby
Listening to music
Enjoying a creative project
Joy is an important part of your overall well-being.
Fall is a beautiful reminder that letting go is a natural part of life.
Just as trees release their leaves, we can release things that no longer serve us.
This might include:
Clutter in your home
Unrealistic expectations
Negative self-talk
Commitments that drain your energy
The pressure to do everything perfectly
Giving yourself permission to let go creates more space for peace, joy, and the things that matter most.
25. Prioritize Rest and Recharging
Rest is one of the most overlooked forms of self-care.
In a culture that often celebrates being busy, allowing yourself time to slow down can feel uncomfortable. But rest helps restore your energy and supports your overall well-being.
This fall, allow yourself to:
Go to bed a little earlier
Take a quiet afternoon break
Say no when your schedule is too full
Enjoy moments of stillness without feeling guilty
Rest is not something you have to earn. It is something your mind and body need.
If you’re looking for a simple way to get your whole life ready for the season, my Fall Reset Checklist goes beyond self-care with ideas for refreshing your home, kitchen, wardrobe, schedule, and routines.

How many times have you told yourself “I’ll start being productive tomorrow”? How many times have you said that you’re going to get things done today, but end up watching Netflix instead? We’ve all been there. It’s hard to be productive when we’re feeling unmotivated and don’t really know how to get started. In this blog post, we will share some tips on how to be more productive at home and finally get stuff done!
What does it mean to be productive?
Being productive means being efficient and effective in how you use your time, energy, and resources to achieve your goals. It doesn’t mean doing more things or being busy all the time. In fact, you can actually be more productive by doing less.
It’s important to find a balance between work and rest and to do what works for you. Some people are more productive in the morning, while others find that they get more done at night. Admittedly, I am a true night owl and accomplish more in the evening. Find what works for you and stick to it.

Here are some tips on how to be productive at home every day:
– Make a list of things you need to do and prioritize them. Break down big tasks into smaller tasks. By keeping tasks small you can avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed.
This is the monthly planner I use to plan and prioritize which works well for me. It’s not only a planner but a beautiful journal as well. (Use code Karen15Off for any new subscription.)
– Set a timer for a certain amount of time and
work on one task until the timer goes off. Then take a break.
– Get rid of distractions. Turn off your phone, close the door, and focus on what you’re doing.
– Take breaks when you need them. Stand up and stretch, take a walk, or have a snack. Do something that takes you away from the task at hand. (Check out this interesting article published by WebMD “Leisure Time Is Good for Your Mental Health, Productivity”
– Reward yourself for completing tasks. This will help you to stay motivated.
– Set realistic goals. Don’t try to tackle too many things at once or you’ll quickly become overwhelmed. Start with one or two small goals that you know you can accomplish and build from there.
– Create a daily routine and stick to it. This will help you to stay on track and focused on what you need to do. Make sure to schedule in time for breaks as well so that you don’t get burnt out.
– Create a positive environment for yourself. This means having a space that is clean and organized, where you feel comfortable working. Surround yourself with things that inspire you and make you happy. This will help you to stay motivated and focused on your goals. (You can check out my post on how to declutter your workspace here.)
How to get more accomplished in the morning
– Get up early and start your day with a positive attitude.
– Make your bed as soon as you get up. This will help you to feel more accomplished and motivated throughout the day.
– Eat a healthy breakfast to fuel your body and mind.
– Sit down and make a list of things you need to accomplish for the day. Prioritize your tasks and start working on them one by one.
– Make sure you have a plan for the next day before you go to bed. This will help you to wake up with a clear purpose and focus on what needs to be done.
– Set aside some time in the evening to relax and unwind. This will help you to feel more rested and ready to tackle your tasks the next day.
–Avoid working on tasks right before bed. This will help you to sleep better and feel more rested in the morning.

Here are a few motivational quotes to help you be more productive at home
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” – Mark Twain
“We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.” – Maya Angelou
“What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” – Zig Ziglar
“If you want to make your dreams come true, the first thing you have to do is wake up.” – J.M. Power
I hope these tips and quotes help you to be more productive at home. Remember to find what works for you and stick with it. Do what makes you happy and don’t be afraid to take breaks when you need them. And most importantly, believe in yourself and your ability to accomplish great things.

Daphne is a very inspiring woman and her blog posts really captured my attention. When she agreed to write this guest post on the topic of getting out of your comfort zone, I knew it would be great! Check it out below.
Get to know Daphne –
She is the creator of the Free At 50 blog, which focuses on life after corporate, how to transition into professional freedom, and resources to create income streams.
Daphne has a diverse background having worked in state government, small business, and most recently, a large corporate entity. Her experience supporting businesses and leading a national staff training program, provided her with a skill set she is using to design a lifestyle as a blogger and to inspire others.
I did all the “right things” for 30 years. Started working in what came to be my full-time job when I was in college. I paid taxes and never took more than a week off (and let’s be honest: I was always a phone call, text, or email away!). Then in 2020 I was laid off and getting out of my comfort zone was necessary.
RELATED: Read my story here, where I shared how my Covid layoff was a blessing on my Free At 50 blog!
Living life as a GenXer during Covid brought a mindset shift.
I’ve never been a “woo” type person, but shifting your mindset is a real thing. Especially for those of us in midlife, who were brought up to do the “right things.” We were the first ones in and last out at the office. Many of us went to college and got degrees. (spent a lot of money on it actually!).
Now, outside the bubble of 9-5 life, I had to pivot. Believe me, I’ve done it professionally over the years, but one thing I never went without a paycheck.
For the first time ever, I was filing for unemployment. And you know what? I felt no guilt.
Why? I’d done my time, paid my taxes from age 19-49, and earned big bucks – for OTHERS. Since my layoff was due to budget constraints and happened during Covid, I had time to dig deep and do a mindset shift.
I’ve gained skills. I can do this entrepreneurial thing, which for me was the Free At 50 blog- bringing my concept of owning my time to life.
You can use your skills to own your time too.
Get over your fears: you can use your skills, experience a mindset shift, and enjoy the back half of life.
You have skills and they can be married with your passions.
When I was laid off, people were so “sorry” and offered assistance in finding something else, another corporate job!
No thanks.
The truth was I was mentally ready to own my time. I knew I had skills but was unsure where to start. I just knew that semi-retirement and being able to get to my aging parents without having to ask for time off was vital. So was leaving Michigan, where I wasn’t loving it, and moving to my favorite vacation spot.
My friend Diana got it. She understood I didn’t need help throwing my resume around the industry. She heard me. Not everyone in Gen X does get it because we’re conditioned on the 9-5 tradition.
Diana recommended The 4-Hour Workweek. I downloaded it from the library on my Kindle and within hours, ordered a hard copy so I could highlight and bookmark passages!
In short: it was an affirmation that not only could I break the 9-5 tradition, but I could use the skills I’ve gained over the years, marry them with my passions, and create a business and a lifestyle that makes me happy.
It actually eliminated the term “retirement” from my brain. Why wait until some “age” that our culture has said is appropriate to start enjoying life?
What if I don’t make it to that age? Let’s be honest, I was watching Gen X leave us too soon.
I had a former colleague pass away from a heart attack at age 50.
I have a good friend who was waiting for her last kid to leave high school and would “someday” start a freelance business to semi-retire. She was in a horrible car crash and began on a path to a long rehabilitation. When would someday come?
The alcohol and opioid deaths- I am certain we all have been or know someone affected over the last few years.
Ok- I’m not trying to depress you all, but instead: INSPIRE YOU. Life is precious and I was reading this book and KNEW I was going to take my skills and use them for building a “next chapter.”
Mindset shifts are possible, even at midlife!
Simply put: the 4-Hour Workweek was my first mindset shift in my journey out of my comfort zone. It gave me the realization that I can change the way I view myself and my future.
And that happened for me at age 49.
Take action: it’s the final step on my 6-steps to escape the 9-5 but a constant in getting out of your comfort zone anytime.
As a blogger focused on sharing inspiration and resources to build your next chapter, working on it myself, here are my 6 steps:
Find your why.
Shift your mindset.
Narrow your options.
Research the best fit.
Build your toolkit.
Take action.
Taking action is vital all the way through your journey. I have it as step 6 to remind you all that you need to move forward constantly.
Find the right people.
At this point in life, it seems strange I’m asking you to step out of your comfort zone of your friends and family, but I am.
Join Facebook groups.
Hire a coach.
Build a peer tribe.
Invest in yourself so you can use your skills to build your next chapter.
I’m not saying ditch your friends and family, but make sure you have people around you that understand your goals and can assist you in reaching them.
My call to action for you!
Grab my checklist by using the link in my bio.
No matter your situation, start with Step 1: your why. Midlife is the time to really focus on what’s important to us.
Don’t let the fear of leaving your comfort zone hold you back from enjoying every moment you have left on this amazing earth! If I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be living in Colonial Williamsburg, I’d still be in Michigan.
