How to Create a Good Evening Routine for Better Sleep and Productivity

Spread the love

How you spend your evening can have a huge impact on your sleep quality and productivity the next day. A good evening routine should include activities that will help you relax and prepare for bed. In this blog post, we will discuss some tips for creating a good evening routine that will help you get better sleep and be more productive during the day.

I will say, I keep a fairly consistent evening routine with one exception, which is not having a consistent time I go to sleep.  This is due to the fact that I have a terrible habit of scrolling social media as a way to relax, or so I think it’s relaxing.   It’s not uncommon for me to end up down a rabbit hole on social media which means I’m not falling asleep until the wee hours of the morning.  As a result, my mornings are not as productive as I would like. Can you relate?

Benefits of A Consistent Evening Routine

There are many benefits of having a consistent evening routine.  For one, it can help to improve your sleep quality. A set bedtime and winding-down routine can signal to your body that it’s time to rest, making it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night.

A regular evening routine can also help to reduce stress and anxiety, as it can provide a sense of structure and predictability in an otherwise chaotic world. It can also be a great way to wind down after a long day and transition into relaxation mode.

Finally, a set evening routine can help to improve your overall productivity and efficiency. By taking care of some of your responsibilities before bed, you can free up more time during the day to focus on your goals and get things done.

So, if you’re looking to improve your sleep, reduce stress, or be more productive, consider establishing a consistent evening routine. It may just be the key to success!

Tips for Creating an Evening Routine You Are Sure to Benefit From:

Be Mindful of Your Food and Fluid Intake

. Avoid too much caffeine as it can make falling asleep difficult.

. Avoid late meals.  Eating too close to bedtime can cause an upset stomach and/or indigestion.

. Try not to drink too much water before bed since it will cause you to be up frequently in the night.

Consistency Is Key

. Establish a regular sleep schedule which allows for 7-9 hours of sleep every night.

. Go to bed at the same time each night or close to it. Also, set an alarm to wake up at the same time each morning.

Set The Mood

. Create a relaxing environment.  Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet and a comfortable temperature to sleep in.

. Keep an extra blanket handy at the end of your bed in case you get cold in the middle of the night.  This way you’re not fumbling around looking for a blanket in a dark closet.

. Diffuse essential oils such as lavender and chamomile.  Certain essential oils can help promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

Prepare your Body with An Evening Routine

. Take a shower or bath.  This can help your body relax and prepare for sleep.

. Brush your teeth.  This can be a relaxing way to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down.

. Perform your nighttime skincare routine.  Feeling refreshed and clean before bed can provide for amazing relaxation.  This is probably my favorite part of my evening routine. {Click here to read my blog post on basic skincare.}

. Stretch or do some light yoga.  Both can promote relaxation allowing your body to be ready for sleep.

. Practice deep breathing exercises.  Deep breathing exercises can help your body decompress calm down allowing you to fall asleep.

Set your Mind Up to Successfully Unwind

. Journal.  Processing and writing down your thoughts will help you release them before bed so they don’t keep you awake. {Be sure to check out my favorite journal here.}

Journal

. Read a book or listen to calming music.  Either one of these is restful activity to help you forget about the day’s stresses and clear your mind.

. Disconnect from electronics. Give yourself time to unplug from screens. Blue light can be disruptive to your sleep (see this article from Healthline).

Get Organized So You Can Have a Productive Morning

. Prepare for the next day by setting out your clothes, keys, and other things you will need for the next morning.  By doing so you can eliminate unnecessary morning stress when you are trying to get out the door in a hurry.

A beneficial evening routine is a personal matter and it’s important to find what works best for you. Consistency will help the process along, resulting in better sleep as well as increased productivity in your day-to-day life!

Conclusion

Creating and following a routine each evening can have a profound impact on your daily productivity, stress level, and overall mood. By taking the time to wind down gradually each night, you can ensure that you’re refreshed and ready to take on whatever tomorrow may bring.
