Ingredient Notes & Helpful Substitutions

  • Shortening: Helps cookies keep their shape while baking. I have not tried butter with this recipe as it may cause cookies to slightly spread.
  • Buttermilk: Adds tenderness. No buttermilk? Mix 1 cup milk with 1 tablespoon vinegar and let it sit for a few minutes.
  • Gluten-Free Option: Substitute the all-purpose flour with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.

How to Make Easy Valentine Sugar Cookies

  1. Cream the shortening in a large bowl.
  2. Add the sugar and eggs, mixing until combined.
  3. Mix the baking soda into the buttermilk.
  4. Add the buttermilk mixture to the shortening, sugar, and eggs.
  5. Mix in the remaining ingredients until a smooth dough forms.
  6. Refrigerate dough for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  7. On a floured surface, roll out dough to about ¼-inch thick and sprinkle lightly with sugar.
  8. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on a baking sheet.
  9. Bake at 375°F for 8 minutes, just until the edges are set. Don’t overbake!
  10. Let cool briefly before transferring to a cooling rack.
  11. Decorate as desired using icing, colored sugar, sprinkles, or simply enjoy them plain.

Make Ahead, Freezing & Storage Tips

These cookies freeze beautifully, making them perfect for baking ahead. Layer cookies in a freezer-safe container with parchment paper between each layer. When you’re ready to enjoy, take out a cookie or two and let them thaw at room temperature. I love having a few tucked away for a little self-care treat!

And if you enjoy keeping track of your favorite recipes for future baking, my vintage spring recipe cards (available on Etsy) are a lovely way to jot them down and save them for years to come. They’re also a charming touch if you plan to gift cookies to friends or family.

FAQ’s

Why add baking soda to this caramel corn recipe?

Baking soda is added to caramel popcorn to make the caramel light and crunchy. When baking soda is mixed into the hot caramel, it reacts with the sugar and butter, creating tiny air bubbles. These bubbles help the caramel coat the popcorn more evenly and prevent it from becoming too hard, so you get that perfect crisp texture instead of a sticky or overly chewy coating

Why does caramel corn get soggy?

Caramel corn gets soggy when the caramel absorbs moisture, either from the air or the popcorn. This happens if the caramel isn’t cooked to the right temperature or if it’s stored in a humid, non-airtight container. To keep it crispy, bake the caramel-coated popcorn to help the caramel set properly.

How do you make caramel popcorn crispy again?

To make caramel popcorn crispy again, spread it out on a baking sheet and bake it at 250°F (120°C) for about 10–15 minutes. Stir it every 5 minutes to ensure it heats evenly. This will help the caramel harden and restore the crispiness. Be sure to let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container.

Simple Banana Bread Recipe: Moist, Easy, and Perfect for Using Ripe Bananas

There always seems to be a few bananas left sitting on the counter a little longer than planned in our house. There are so many reasons this recipe has stayed a favorite in our home over the years.

This recipe originally came from a recipe book my mom created many years ago, which makes it even more special to our family.

The Secret to Moist Banana Bread

If you have ever wondered what makes banana bread soft and moist, it really comes down to a few simple things.

First, the bananas should be very ripe with lots of brown spots. The riper the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful your banana bread will be.

Second, avoid overmixing the batter once you add the flour. Overmixing can make banana bread dense and dry.

Lastly, keep a close eye on baking time. Baking just until a toothpick comes out clean helps the bread stay perfectly moist.

Most often, I bake this recipe in traditional loaf pans or bread pans. However, there have definitely been times when I have used a muffin pan for easy grab-and-go snacks or quick breakfasts.

Mini loaf pans are another great option, especially if you are baking banana bread to give as a thoughtful homemade gift during the holidays or as part of a cozy self-care basket.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What are the best 4 apples for baking?

When it comes to baking, selecting the right apples can significantly impact the taste and texture of your dish. Here are four apple varieties that are commonly recommended for baking:

.Granny Smith: Known for their tart flavor and firm texture, Granny Smith apples hold up well during baking and add a pleasant tanginess to your cake.

.Honeycrisp: With their sweet and slightly tart flavor, Honeycrisp apples provide a juicy and crisp bite to your cake. They add a refreshing sweetness without being overly sugary.

.Jonagold: These apples offer a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors, making them ideal for baking. They have a firm texture that holds their shape well when cooked.

.Gala: Gala apples are known for their sweet and mild flavor, which adds a natural sweetness to your cake. They have a softer texture compared to other varieties, making them excellent for creating a tender cake texture.

Feel free to experiment with other varieties based on your personal preferences and what’s available in your area.

Should you peel apples before baking an apple cake recipe?

Whether or not to peel apples before baking depends on your preference and the texture you desire in your cake. Here are some considerations:

.Peeling: Peeling apples before baking results in a softer texture in the finished cake, as the peel can become chewy during baking. If you prefer a smoother texture without any chewiness, peeling the apples is recommended.

.Not Peeling: On the other hand, leaving the peel on adds texture and visual appeal to the cake. The peel contains additional nutrients and fiber, which can enhance the nutritional value of your dessert. Some people enjoy the rustic look and slightly chewy texture that the peel adds to the cake.

Ultimately, whether to peel the apples is a matter of personal preference. If you’re unsure, you can try both methods to see which you prefer.

Should you soak apples before baking?

Soaking apples before baking is not necessary for most recipes, but it can be done for specific purposes:

.Preventing Browning: If you’re concerned about the apples browning before they’re baked, you can soak them in a solution of water and lemon juice. This helps prevent oxidation and keeps the apples looking fresh.

.Rehydrating: If your apples are particularly dry or if you want to ensure they stay juicy during baking, you can soak them briefly in water before adding them to the cake batter. This step can help rehydrate the apples and prevent them from becoming too dry during baking.

For this simple apple cake recipe, soaking the apples is not necessary. Simply prepare and slice the apples as directed in the recipe, and they will bake up beautifully in the cake.
