Tips to Help Find More Balance Between Work and Family

Set Realistic Goals and Priorities for Both Work and Family

Determine what must be done and when it can be done. Build in some flexibility to account for the unexpected. Let’s be real, we all know the unexpected will eventually happen.

Establish Good Communication

Communicate your expectations and needs to your family. Explain why it’s important for you to complete certain tasks and ask for their understanding and support. Having everyone on the same page always makes things easier.

Use Technology to Your Advantage

If possible, use technology to stay connected with family while you’re working or vice versa. Check in with family during your breaks to potentially avoid unnecessary interruptions while you are working.

Organization Is Key to Balancing Work and Family

Try to be as organized as possible. This means setting up a schedule and sticking to it as much as possible. This can be difficult at times, but it’s important to try to have some structure in your day. It will make things run more smoothly and help you to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Plan Ahead for More Success In Overcoming Challenges of Balancing Work and Family

Take time each week to review what activities are scheduled for the week ahead. You can also plan out your meals according to what activities are on the schedule for the week. For example, plan on leftovers or quick easy meals on the days that will be extra busy.

Use a dry erase board to map out your week. This way everyone has the opportunity to review the activities scheduled for the week and will therefore be better prepared.

Have a Support System to Help You Achieve Better Balance Between Work and Family

Reach out to others – Connect with other parents and/or caregivers to see how they handle the challenges of balancing work and family. This can provide you with some valuable insights and ideas. Additionally, try to create a support network of friends or family members who can offer help when needed. It is comforting to know you have a backup system in place when things don’t go as planned.

Set Boundaries

Let your family know when you need to focus on work, and put your phone on “do not disturb” so that you can avoid distractions. At the same time, make sure to unplug from work when you are spending time with your family. Turn off your email notifications and give yourself a break from the challenges of the workplace.

Make Time

Set aside time each day or week for family only. This will help you make sure that you’re spending quality time with your loved ones, and not just going through the motions.

Delegate

Delegate responsibilities at work and at home. You can’t do everything yourself.  Delegating tasks will help ease your workload and give you more time to focus on other things.

Take Time for Self-Care As You Face Challenges In Balancing Work and Family

Make sure to schedule some time for yourself – even if it is just a few minutes each day. Taking time to relax and rejuvenate will help you be a better parent/caregiver and employee.
