Tips For Healthy Appearing Winter Skin

Stay Hydrated

We tend to associate the need to stay hydrated with the warmer months rather than year-round.

However, it is imperative that you continue to drink just as much water in the winter as you do in the summer.  Your skin needs hydration to help it stay healthy.

To help you remember to drink plenty of water, get yourself a water bottle that tracks your water intake for the day.

You may even consider cutting down on caffeine and alcohol as these can be sources of dehydration. Making these healthy habits a part of your routine will keep your skin looking and feeling great all year long.

Use A Humidifier

If you don’t already have one, purchase a humidifier and keep it running in the room(s) you tend to spend the most time in.

Added bonus, your plants will love it!

Wearing Sunscreen Is The Most Important Tip To Healthy Appearing Winter Skin

In order to have healthy appearing winter skin, you should apply sunscreen daily.  This is one of the most important steps of a good skincare routine.

My first choice is mineral sunscreen since it protects from both UVA and UVB rays and begins working upon application.

Chemical sunscreen takes approximately 15 minutes to start working, and quite honestly, I don’t want my skin to absorb the nasty ingredients in chemical sunscreens.

Moisturize

I can’t stress enough the importance of a good moisturizer containing all-natural ingredients.  If your skin isn’t responding to your current moisturizer, it may be time to switch to something more hydrating.

The change of seasons can be very hard on your skin so don’t be afraid to switch up your skincare products.

It is best practice to moisturize immediately after cleansing your face in the morning and evening.  Be sure to moisturize your face, neck, and chest.

Moisturizing your neck and chest is so important because those are areas that show the first signs of aging.

moisturizer

My favorite morning moisturizer is Daylight Advanced Facial Cream.  It is a lightweight formula using sea kelp which helps plump and firm your skin as well as other skin-nurturing ingredients.

At night I enjoy Nightlight Advanced Facial Cream.  This particular moisturizer uses hibiscus flower acid to help rejuvenate your skin.

Remember while we sleep our whole body is in restore mode making it the most optimal time to treat your skin with TLC.

Turn Down The Temps In your Bath/Shower

Avoid long hot showers/baths. As nice as warming up with a hot shower or bath can be, hot water can cause your skin to dry out even more.  So be mindful of your water temperature when showering or bathing.

Lukewarm water is best for cleansing your face.  Also, after showering or bathing, blot the water off rather than rubbing your skin.  Blotting allows some of the water to remain on your skin allowing more hydration.

Achieve Healthy Appearing Winter Sking Be Re-evaluating Your Skincare Regimen

With the change in seasons, our skincare needs can change as well.

If your skin is feeling dry & flaky you may need a richer moisturizer to address that, or perhaps a gentler or even a gentler facial cleanser.

It may be hit or miss at first to figure out where the change needs to be made, but do evaluate what you are using, and make changes accordingly.

Don’t Over Exfoliate

While we know exfoliating helps turnover dead skin cells, keep in mind that doing so too frequently during the colder months is not a good idea.

Your skin barrier is already compromised due to the dry cold air.  Using an exfoliant once or twice a week is probably more than sufficient during the winter months.  If your skin is already dry, be very gentle when exfoliating so as not to cause further irritation.

Bundling Up Will Help Keep You Achieve Healthy Appearing Winter Skin

If you have to be out in the cold for any length of time, take the extra step to protect your face and neck from the harsh temperatures and wind.

There are so many fun hats & scarves available to meet just about all style needs and provide the much-needed protection your skin deserves.

Eat A Healthy Diet

Our skin is a direct reflection of what we are putting into our bodies.  If you want to achieve healthy appearing winter skin, be sure you are fueling your body with good nutrition.  Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is always a plus to healthy eating.

You can also add high-quality supplements for added nutrition you may not be getting in your diet.  Discuss adding vitamins/supplements with your physician before adding them to your diet.

Don’t Forget Your Shades

It may seem odd to some to wear sunglasses during the winter; however, you do want to provide extra protection for the very delicate skin around your eyes.

Wearing sunglasses during the winter will provide protection from the UV rays that can cause skin cancer, discoloration, and other signs of aging.

So rock those shades all year round!
